Born in 1892 in Georgia, Borders dedicated her life to improving the health and well-being of African American women and their families during a time when access to quality healthcare was severely limited by racial segregation. She founded and operated the Borders' Maternity Hospital in Camilla, Georgia, which provided essential prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care to countless women. Borders was not only a skilled midwife but also a community leader and educator, who trained other women in the art and science of midwifery.
