Mama Maude Callen was a direct entry midwife that serviced in the low-country area of South Carolina, which was one the most rural and underserved communities. She managed a clinic out of her home, which was many miles away from the nearest hospital. Mama Maude would walk miles through woods and creeks to care for her patients. She also trained other women in her community to be midwives.
