Mama Bridget "Biddy" Mason (1818-1891) was born enslaved in either Mississippi or Georgia. She learned midwifery skills from other enslaved women. The skills were passed down from African, Caribbean, and Native American traditions. Mama Biddy practiced midwifery, herbal medicine, and livestock and agricultural care. She is renown for the 1856 landmark case Mason v. Smith, when she sued her master for her and her family’s freedom,
