Mama Margaret Charles Smith (1906-2004) was a pioneering midwife in Alabama who caught over 3,000 babies. She was the first officially recognized midwife in her county.
In 1996, Mama Margaret co-authored a book highlighting her remarkable career, titled "Listen to Me Good: The Life Story of an Alabama Midwife."
